Creating Story Maps and Timelines with free Knight Lab Tools

Creating Story Maps and Timelines with free Knight Lab Tools Online

Presenter: Sarah York-Bertram

The Open Access Web Platform Workshops, presented by York University graduate students in partnership with York University Library’s Digital Scholarship Centre, offer an introduction to free open access web platforms StoryMapJS, TimelineJS, and Scalar. These platforms, which are compatible with each other, enable interactive digital storytelling and research that can take your work where it needs to go—in the community, online, in presentations, in the classroom, in the lab, and beyond. This workshop is the first of two in a series, but you are not required to take both!

The Knight Lab workshop presents introductory user knowledge on StoryMapJS and TimelineJS platforms. Participants will learn how to use the platforms, which can stand alone or act as third-party platforms embedded in Scalar or other web platforms.

The workshop will cover the topics of structure, narratives, and establishing relationships between stories, places, events, and actors. Learn with York University’s Conjugal Slavery in War graduate student researchers, PhD candidate Sarah York-Bertram and PhD student Zhi Ming Sim, on using maps and timeline visuals to document the journey of a traveling exhibit and survivor-centred advocacy commitments.

This workshop includes a hands-on segment for participants to build their own Story Map and/or Timeline.

This workshop is presented as part of Open Access Week, with the support of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
