Safeguarding Yourself Online Online

Presenter: Kris Joseph

As graduate students or faculty members, we are often asked to make our research visible, have an active online profile, and engage with other academics in social media circles. However, the push for engaged, online public scholarship is sometimes at odds with what we know of online behaviour: the subject of your research may make you a target for online harassment, doxxing, and other forms of abuse. This workshop provides a sobering glimpse into the nature of research harassment and provides an empowering approach to managing your risk and online safety through the use of threat modelling and strategic action.

For more awareness of the topic at York University, including a November gallery exhibition and a dedicated symposium on the subject, see the Bearing Witness site.

Participants in this workshop may also be interested the "Safeguarding your Research Data" session.
