Using Generative AI for Research Assignments and Projects Online

Are you exploring and building your knowledge of generative AI and interested in using it for research purposes? Do you find it confusing to determine when AI-based tools are useful and appropriate for conducting research for assignments and projects for courses?
In this workshop, with some hands-on practice opportunities, we will address these questions. We will talk about what generative AI tools are, including free tools students can access, and potential applications for student research, such as idea generation, generating literature maps and more. Other themes we will explore include how to design effective prompts to interact with these tools and how these prompts can help you develop search strategies that lead to more successful research projects. Finally, we will cover the strengths and limitations of these tools for research, include some pointers on ethical and academic integrity considerations that apply at York University and provide strategies that can assist with verifying the quality and reliability of outputs generated.
