Beyond the AI Chatbot: Introduction to Scholarly AI Tools Online
Presenter: Sophie Bury and Ted Belke
Ready to move beyond general-purpose chatbots into AI tools built specifically for academic research? In this workshop we will introduce AI-integrated research discovery and workflow tools that can streamline the research process for those already familiar with the basics of generative AI. This sub-category of AI tools can be a valuable addition to any serious researcher’s toolkit, supporting tasks like conducting literature reviews, generating and visualizing literature maps, and summarizing or analyzing scholarly papers. We will share approaches to evaluation to help you make informed decisions when using a scholarly AI tool including ethical and academic integrity considerations. We will explore common strengths and shortcomings across various free and freemium options with some comparisons to the library’s academic search platform OMNI. You will learn about well-established and newly emerging research discovery and workflow tools and leave with an understanding of how they may enhance your research process, working in tandem with library resources.
