Humanities Research Class Three: From Sources to Argument Online

Presenter: Scott Kenneth McLaren

A good literature review does more than summarize what other scholars have said — it shows where you stand in an ongoing scholarly conversation. This class teaches you how to map a body of scholarship, identify its major debates and tensions, and write a synthesis that puts sources into conversation rather than discussing them one at a time. You’ll learn practical strategies for following citations, organising sources, and deciding whose work matters to your argument, while considering citation as a question of intellectual credit as well as academic convention. We’ll also explore how AI tools can — and cannot — help with humanities research, including the biases and exclusions they can reproduce. By the end of the class, you’ll be better equipped to explain not only what other scholars have said, but what remains to be said and where your own argument belongs.
