Beyond the Page: An Indigenous book and film club - The Marrow Thieves Online

Join us in conversation. Beyond the Page is a relaxed gathering open to all of York community members. Throughout this series we will be discussing a variety of Indigenous materials such as novels, short stories, letters and films.
This month, guest co-host Adrienne Young joins us to discuss the role of Indigenous youth in community, including the ways Indigenous knowledges inform recognition of the unique gifts, insight, and promise for cultural continuity this life stage brings. Adrienne is a mixed-race PhD candidate in Social Work, of Scottish, Irish and Anishinaabe ancestry, and a proud member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Her research, grounded in Two-Eyed Seeing and community-engaged methodology, examines how youth historically marginalized by the mental health system can meaningfully influence its transformation.

In this novel, “humanity has nearly destroyed its world through global warming, but now an even greater evil lurks. The indigenous people of North America are being hunted and harvested for their bone marrow, which carries the key to recovering something the rest of the population has lost: the ability to dream. In this dark world, Frenchie and his companions struggle to survive as they make their way up north to the old lands. For now, survival means staying hidden - but what they don't know is that one of them holds the secret to defeating the marrow thieves.”
